Adding Subtracting Multiplying Dividing Fractions Level 2-4

This is a foundation topic in Fractions which is a critical base of algebraic operations. The topic is not new and starts from Key Stage 2 however I have seen sometimes A-Level Maths students making mistakes when the concept is used in another context.

Key Points and Common Mistakes:

  • You need to find a common denominator for adding and subtracting fractions with a different denominator, you don't need this for multiplying and dividing.
  • Dividing fractions is essentially multiplying the first fraction to the reciprocal of the second fraction. Don't forget, you need to get to used to the simplifying, if you can, before multiplying fractions so that you deal with smaller numbers, can save time and avoid possible mistakes.
  • Many students have an issue when a number is multiplied or divided into a fraction. A number essentially is a fraction with a denominator of one. To avoid confusion you can add the one to the denominator of the number and apply the same rules as for multiplying and dividing fractions here.

At the end of the video, there are some worked examples and advanced topics.
